JRR Tolkien Book Beren and Lúthien Released | TimeThe publication was compiled by Christopher Tolkien , a year before the same was done with the tale of the Fall of Gondolin. Tolkien, which were published as The Silmarillion. Returning from France and the battle of the Somme at the end of , he wrote the tale in the following year. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father's own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost. The intent of the book is to extract a 'single narrative' out of the ever evolving materials that make up the tale of Beren and Luthien. It does not contain every version or edit to the story, but those chosen by Christopher Tolkien which he believed would offer the most 'clarity' without need to over explain the complexities of the changes.

Early versions of the story, published in the standalone book in , described Beren as a Noldorin elf. Tolkien wrote several versions of their story, the latest in The Silmarillion , and the tale is also mentioned in The Lord of the Rings. The story takes place during the First Age of Middle-earth , about 6, years  before the events of The Lord of the Rings. He was slain by Carcharoth , the wolf of Angband, but alone of mortal Men returned from the dead. During the s Tolkien started to reshape the tale and to transform it into an epic poem which he called The Lay of Leithian. He never finished it, leaving three of seventeen planned cantos unwritten.
Great news to all Tolkien fans! The book, which will compile together all known versions of the story, will be edited by Christopher Tolkien and illustrated by Alan Lee. This is fantastic news and I personally cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. More info available at this link. I did think that The Children of Hurin was worth the price of admission. I only knew of Lay of Aotrou and Itroun coming out soon.
Garth said the story was written by Tolkien while he was in hospital and convalescing directly after the Battle of the Somme. Morgoth is trying to discover and destroy the hidden city of Gondolin, while Ulmo is supporting the Noldor, the kindred of the elves who live in the city. Tolkien's father dies. His wife and sons, John and younger brother Hilary, come to England and settle in the west Midlands. Tolkien attends King Edward's School for boys, Birmingham.
Beren and Lúthien is a publication that presents the evolution of J.R.R. of names in texts of different dates would not serve the purpose of this book.
