T he first deed box sent to me from London containing some of the untold cases of Sherlock Holmes was a source of wonder to me as I explored the various documents within it. By Martin Chilton , Culture Editor online. Heirs to the literary rights of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle suffered a setback yesterday when the US Supreme Court refused to hear an "emergency petition" over a leading American crime writer using the characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson in a new book. Justice Elena Kagan, 54, who was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama, provided no comment as to why she had dismissed the plea by the Scottish author's heirs over a book by Leslie Klinger. This idea is difficult for many to accept as they cling to the image of Our Heroes as senior citizens.
John H. Watson is Sherlock Holmes' friend, assistant and sometime flatmate, and the first person narrator of all but four of these stories. He is described as the typical Victorian-era gentleman, unlike the more eccentric Holmes. He is astute, although he can never match his friend's deductive skills. Whilst retaining his role as Holmes's friend and confidant, Watson has been adapted in various films, television series, video games, comics and radio programmes.
