The Classic of Mountains and Seas by Anonymous

A sort of travelogue-bestiary of Chinese mythological places, including notes about strange creatures of the various mountains. A bit repetitive after a while. I feel slightly weird about giving 4 stars to a book which I found so confusing. It was an enjoyable kind of bafflement, though - delight, wonder, and the thrill of the unexpectedly strange. I love The Classic of Mountains and Seas. The Classic narrates episodes of mythical figures, notably the gods Foremost, Fond Care, and Yellow, and goddesses like the fearsome Queen Mother of the West and the doomed Girl Lovely, the nurturing solar and lunar goddesses, and many others unknown outside this text.

The first known editor of the Classic was Liu Xiang from the Western Han, who among other things cataloged the Han imperial library.
