Dash & Lily's Book of Dares (Dash & Lily, #1) by Rachel CohnWhat could be more charming than an anonymous romance between two teenagers in Manhattan during Christmastime? Each chapter switches perspectives between the two, giving you both sides in anticipation of what is assumed to become true love. When the time comes for them to meet face to face, not everything goes as planned. After so much waiting and expectation, the two push beyond their previous obstacles and try to pursue their relationship. The unconventional style of writing is what really captured me. It was enough to subconsciously entertain me without being tedious or too verbose. The boy-and-girl concept is classic, but the plot is original and the characters seem all too real.
Dash & Lily's Book Of Dares Review
Book Review: Dash and Lily's Book of Dares, by Rachel Cohn and David Leviathan
Remember Me. Dash is a fairly serious and snarly 16 year old boy. In fact, he hardly seems or acts like a teenager at all. You can instantly tell how intelligent he is; its hard not to be intimidated by his vocabulary. He is very wordy, but that is mostly because he loves everything about words and books.
One day Dash is perusing the shelves of his favorite bookstore, the Strand, and instead of a first edition Salinger, he finds a notebook challenging him to follow the dares left for him by a girl named Lily and leave some of his own in return. Each dare reveals something new about Dash and Lily and brings them closer to the day they will actually meet. When that day finally arrives, they are forced to reconcile the versions of each other they had in their heads with the real thing. This book has a frenetic energy about it, like everything is happening so quickly that neither Dash nor Lily can keep their changing opinions straight. For most of this novel, Dash and Lily never actually occupy the same space.
How do I get involved in the Guardian children's books site?
Lily, one of the protagonists of the novel, has written a set of clues and challenges in a red notebook and left it on her favourite bookstore shelf waiting for the right guy to come along and complete those challenges. The two main characters Dash and Lily are absolute book nerds, who pass a red moleskin notebook between them consisting of dares for the other one to do.
