Best Beginning Chapter Books for 2nd and 3rd Grade – PragmaticMom

Why should kids read series? I know my kids start to think of favorite characters as friends. That encourages reading because when you have a friend you want to read all about her further adventures! So, be prepared to bring home stacks of books home from the library. They are best for children who have moved past easy readers , but are not yet ready for what are generally known as middle grade novels. Please note: Book titles and covers are affiliate links. Usborne Chapter Books - In Order By Age Level

Early Chapter Books for 5 to 8 Year Olds

I simply could not come up with a specfic theme for chapter books for 5 year olds to 8 year olds, and so you will have to accept the eclectic-ness of my curation today. Generally these kids are in first grade and above, but some kindergarteners are ready for these books, too. I became very interested in this type of book because my older son was an early reader so finding material that suited his reading level and was still age appropriate for a kindergartener and 1st grader was a continuing challenge. I ended up reading these aloud to my youngest son, who is now 6 years old, so you know they are all kid and parent-approved. Of course these books can all be enjoyed by boys and girls alike.

For kids, moving into the world of early chapter books is kind of a rite of passage. They feel they have been initiated into the world of big-kid readers. When they find that they are able to understand a longer book, it sends them the message, You can read big books. They are not too hard for you. You are smart. Chapter books are a great confidence-builder. The early chapter books listed here range from very easy readers to longer books with somewhat harder vocabulary.

These 20 early chapter books are great choices for boys, though any young reader, boy or girl, is sure to love the humor, adventure, and heart in these fantastic stories. Hank is an endearing protagonist, always making his classmates and his readers laugh with his funny antics and adventures.
